Annual Research Day

3rd Annual CBQB Research Day @ UIC Heading link

Information about Research Day Event

The UIC Center for Bioinformatics and Quantitative Biology (CBQB) will host its second Research Day on Monday, Novermber 6, 2023, from 9 am to 5 pm in the Thompson Room ABC in Student Center West. The annual research day features a keynote presentation, along with oral and poster presentations from graduate and undergraduate students.

The goal of this event is to raise awareness of exciting research work where bioinformatics, computational biology, and quantitative biology can play important roles, as well as research in developing computational tools and algorithms for understanding quantitatively biological processes. We envision work presented will be across different size and time scales of molecules, networks, cells, tissue, and ecological communities.

The CBQB Research Day will allow students to present their ongoing research projects to faculty members and other students and enhance the interactions among research labs on campus. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the field and the range of research opportunities related to bioinformatics and quantitative biology at UIC.

All undergraduate and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows/research associates, at UIC who are engaged in bioinformatics and quantitative biology research, are encouraged to submit an abstract and participate in the CBQB Research Day.

There will be monetary awards for the best poster and best talk, sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.

Title: Chromosome Organization, DNA Supercoiling and Transcription Regulation.

Dr. Jie Xiao is a professor of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Her research focuses on single-molecule biophysics. Her laboratory develops novel single-molecule imaging and labeling tools in single cells to study the structures, functions, and dynamics of macromolecular assemblies. She developed single-molecule gene expression reporting systems and chromosomal DNA conformation markers to probe the dynamics of gene regulation in bacterial cells. She also devotes significant efforts to developing single-molecule imaging methods with new capacities to aid biological investigations in human cells, fluids, and tissues. Her work is at the frontier of single-molecule single-cell biophysics and has enabled new quantitative understandings of essential cellular processes.
