SUMMARY:2/10 - Yu (Tom) Gao, UIC
DESCRIPTION:This is an in-person event in room COMRB 5175 on west campus (directions). You can also watch seminar live here>> Speaker: Yu (Tom) Gao, Ph.D. Associate Professor Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences UIC, College of Pharmacy Title: Challenges and Opportunities in Proteomics Research Abstract: This talk will highlight the unique challenges and advantages of proteomics. Proteomics reflects real-time protein expression and post-translational modifications, offering a more dynamic snapshot of cellular states than both transcriptomics and genomics. A core focus will be the emerging field of high-sensitivity proteomics, including single-cell proteomics. Unlike bulk analyses, single-cell approaches aim to measure the proteome of individual cells, enabling researchers to capture cellular heterogeneity that is otherwise masked in averaged samples. However, this high-resolution approach poses significant technical challenges, such as the need for ultra-sensitive detection methods, robust sample preparation, and data analysis workflows capable of managing sparse, high-dimensional data. The presentation will also delve into multi-omics data integration, where proteomics data are combined with metabolomic, genomic and transcriptomic profiles. Finally, clinical applications of proteomics will be discussed, demonstrating how protein-based biomarkers can aid in early disease detection and treatment monitoring. To address these complexities, the potential for generative AI in accelerating proteomics data analysis will be discussed, underscoring how machine learning algorithms can revolutionize data processing and interpretation in clinical and research settings. | Event post: https://cbqb.uic.edu/events?page_id=1234
